Cameron Powell Specialism Concept Art - Week 9
Having finished two projects that were due the 28th and 29th of March 2024, I continued work on my Specialism.
I began by sketching a female human body, learning from this tutorial video by Draw Like a Sir.
How to draw female Bodies | Woman Tutorial | DrawlikeaSir (youtube.com)
His video taught me how to use dynamic lines as guides for the body, which can help with defining the curves of a female character. This video also taught me how to use shapes to lay out the pose of a character. Prior to this, I used to draw the pose with lines and circular shapes before I drew the full body.
Then I added details to the sketch like the video said. I drew circles for the breasts and blended them into the body and I defined the shoulders and collarbones.
I was pleased with how this sketch turned out. The tutorial helped me branch out my drawing skills, especially when it comes to character design.
The following week, I was able to produce more character sketches following a similar technique to what I learnt above. While not all of them were related to the S.U.P.E.R project, there were good experiments for my drawing skills.
I drew a male jungle warrior inspired by Tarzan and Conan the Barbarian. I gave him a muscular build
I also decided to draw a pre-existing character. That being Shadow the Hedgehog. I took inspiration from 2D Sonic the Hedgehog drawn by Yuji Uekawa, as well as the Sonic X anime, as I was sketching Shadow.
During that time, my Discord friend Deathglare's birthday was approaching, March 31st to be precise. As a gift, I decided to draw a simple art piece of his OC Miranda/Capon and my OC Newton together.
Newton was named after Sir Isaac Newton, the founder of calculus, optics and gravity. To further reflect this, I have given Newton psychic powers, which mainly consist of him summoning orbs of kinetic energy that get faster every time they bounce on surfaces.
I also drew a character named Rosie and a Pomeranian dog named Muffin. I wanted to convey that she has a fondness for bakery, as evident by "Baked with Love" being embroidered on her sweater and a half eaten muffin in her hand.
Overall, I was pleased with how my sketches turned out. I felt that I have learnt new drawing techniques from Draw Like a Sir's tutorial videos. They helped improve my character design skills and gave me more confidence with becoming a concept artist.

Much better but watch even more concept art tutorials especially on the use of Photoshop and other software. Implement what you have learnt and document it with screen shots etc. Also, explore anatomy more and the use of Photoscrap to create concepts. Keep viewing Feng Zhu videos!
