Cameron Powell Specialism Concept Art - Week 4

This week, I continued production of the Terrible Three's Lair concept. I have already drawn line art of the image on Photoshop.

I have watched FZDSchool's tutorials on Line to Colour scenery to give myself an idea on how the scene would look.

I pasted realistic textures onto the art piece and painted them into the scenery using the Stamp tool.

I added glass textures for the windows and used colour correction to make them look like they have been lit up.

Lastly, I incorporated some lighting onto the scene. I achieved this by duplicating the layers of the cliff face and adjusting the brightness and colour correction before erasing parts of it.

I was pleased with how my first environmental concept turned out. The idea for a lair with the villain's likenesses blatantly exposed was humorous and fitting for a group of joke villains like the Terrible Three. I was also pleased with how I used textures and lighting with my concept, as it gives the scenery more depth. It also helped me save time with adding detail to the scenery. The visual gags were also fun for me to add, such as the "Superheroes and Landlords Keep Out!" sign and how Lollipop's head looks less menacing than Steelbone's and Atta's.

However, there are some areas I could improve on. For example, I thought that the lines could have been thinner so that they can be less noticeable to the viewer. I also thought I could have chosen better textures for the scenery, especially the sign. Not only was the wood texture oddly clean for a tacky sign in front of a villain lair but the text was rather hard to see when I gave it the Burn filter.

I will admit that I did not follow the FZDSchool tutorial on Line to Colour thoroughly. I was too focused on other projects at the time and I used the video as a crutch to make it seem like I was learning from what I have researched. Which is why the final environment concept looks a bit rushed. Next time I do a concept, I will try to make more of an effort to watch tutorial videos more thoroughly and not rush the concept piece.

  1. Better but you still need to implement more of what you are seeing in tutorials and talk about your results in detail.
