Cameron Powell Specialism Concept Art - Week 5

Image
After a two week break in favour of sketching an environment, I decided to make a return to character design.  This time, I will be drawing digitally rather than on paper. I will be using FZDSchool's tutorials on Character Sketching. This time, I will watch and listen to them more thoroughly. Design Cinema – EP 18 - Character Sketching Part 01 (youtube.com) Design Cinema – EP 18 - Character Sketching Part 02 (youtube.com) Design Cinema – EP 18 - Character Sketching Part 03 (youtube.com) I began by drawing a rough stick figure in a pose.  Then, I drew a rough outline around the stick figure. I tried drawing it normally with the Paintbrush tool. However, the results looked rather sloppy, so I decided to draw around it again with the Pen tool.

This week, I continued production of the Terrible Three's Lair concept. I have already drawn line art of the image on Photoshop. Figure 1: Terrible Three Lair lineart I have watched FZDSchool's tutorials on Line to Colour scenery to give myself an idea on how the scene would look. Design Cinema – EP 1 - Line to Color Part 01 (youtube.com) Design Cinema – EP 1 - Line to Color Part 02 (youtube.com) I pasted realistic textures onto the art piece and painted them into the scenery using the Stamp tool.  Figure 2: Terrible Three Lair texture process screenshot I added glass textures for the windows and used colour correction to make them look like they have been lit up. Figure 3: Terrible Three Lair with lights Lastly, I incorporated some lighting onto the scene. I achieved this by duplicating the layers of the cliff face and adjusting the brightness and colour correction before erasing parts of it.  Figure 4: Terrible Three Lair colour corrected I was pleased with how my firs...

Cameron Powell Specialism Concept Art - Week 3

For this week, I decided to take a break from drawing characters and to draw an environmental concept.  The concept in question was the so called "Definitely Secret Lair" of the Terrible Three, which consists of a Mount Rushmore inspired mountain with the Terrible Three's faces surrounded by a moat of lava.  Figure 1: The Terrible Three's "Definitely Secret" Lair The idea of a villain's lair being blatantly exposed to the public with monuments of their own likeness was inspired by Dr Evil's Island Lair from the movie Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Since Dr Evil himself is a goofy parody of spy movie villains, I thought it would be appropriate for the Terrible Three to have a similar looking lair. Figure 2: Dr Evil's Lair There are many details with this concept I was proud of. For starters, I was pleased with how Lollipop's monument is significantly less intimidating than Steelbone's and Atta's. This signifies that Steelbone ...

Bryan Lee O'Malley Bryan Lee O'Malley is a Canadian cartoonist. He is best known for creating the Scott Pilgrim series of Graphic Novels. Figure 6: Scott Pilgrim Graphic Novel Cover The series would receive a video game titled Scott Pilgrim Vs The World in 2010 and a Netflix animated series in 2023, both of which emulate his art style. Figure 7: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World The Game Figure 8: Scott Pilgrim Takes Off What I like about Bryan's art style, especially for Scott Pilgrim, is how it combines elements of Western animation and Anime with exaggerated body proportions and facial expressions, making an art style appeal to either the cartoon or anime demographic. Mike Inel Mike Inel is an American artist, notable for drawing characters in an animesque art style. He is also notable for redesigning cartoon characters in said art style. Mikeinel - Professional, Digital Artist | DeviantArt Some of his most popular videos include the "What if X show was an anime" an...

Cameron Powell Specialism Concept Art - Week 2

Here is some concept art I have produced the week after I uploaded the previous concept art blog. This concept piece depicts Atta De Struct yelling at Lord Steelbone for his incompetence, much to Candace's annoyance. I drew this piece with the intention of conveying the personalities of the Terrible Three to the player through their actions, accompanied by their anime emotion symbols.  Atta is a short tempered overzealous villain who takes her anger out on Steelbone, so I drew her shaking her fist at him with a popping vein symbol, representing her unbridled fury. Lord Steelbone is a bumbling fool who tends to mess up his own plans, so I drew him shrugging at Atta as a sweat drop rolls down the side of his skull, representing his incompetence. Candace Kane is the only sane person of the group who finds Atta and Steelbone's quarrels annoying, so I drew her casually eating a banana split and rolling her eyes during the entire argument. Sketch of The Terrible Three bickering (wh...
