Cameron Powell Final Specialism Proposal

Cameron Powell Final Specialism Proposal

Overview: What I will be doing

For my Specialism Project, I will be developing a 2.5D arcade style beat ‘em up video game about superheroes (2.5D meaning 2D sprites in a 3D environment or a 3D interface).

I envision the game having an art style inspired by Japanese Animation, so I will be taking inspiration from some of the most popular examples of anime, as well as comic book superheroes from the likes of DC and Marvel.

I will be sketching all my ideas on paper and document them on my blog, explaining what they are and what inspired me to make them.

After I have drawn all of the characters and scenarios for my project, I will produce a Microsoft Form document, asking for student feedback as well as who they want to see in action for my final product.

Once all the votes are in, I will draw model sheets of the characters who got the most votes and redraw them on Photoshop.

I will also develop a 3D environment for my character to move around in.

Afterwards, I will import the assets on Unreal Engine and recording test footage of the level in action. I will fix any bugs that may occur.

In the end, I will package my game and evaluate my experience throughout the project.

Methodology: How I will do this

For Starters, I will develop a mind map on what I will deliver for my project.

Then, I will develop two documents on a website called Blogger. One being a blog listing dates where I have done work relating to my Specialism project and another where I explain what I have developed for the project and where I got inspiration from.

I will also develop a mood board, showing sources that I took inspiration from and explaining how they inspired me on my Production document.

I will be using 3DS Max to develop my 3D environment.

I will be using Photoshop to redraw my character designs and model sheets. I will also use it to design textures for my 3D environment.

Since I am new to making beat ‘em up games, much less games with 2D sprites, I will watch some tutorials about making games of that genre on Unreal Engine as well as importing 2D sprites to get an understanding on how it works.

Desirables: Why I want to do this

The reason I am doing this is because I want to share my creative skills and interests with the world. I enjoy media centred around Anime and Superheroes and I want other people to enjoy my video game and appreciate my ideas the same way I did.

In addition, I wanted to create an arcade style beat ‘em up game to introduce a modern audience to a classic style of gameplay while reminding an audience who is familiar with the genre.

I also chose to produce a game with 2D graphics as opposed to 3D models because I have always been fond of video games that use a 2D art style and I feel like they don’t get enough appreciation, especially nowadays.

  1. You need to start working much harder Cameron as this is a big project and complex. Start looking at the modelling and coding aspects especially the later is this will be the most difficult part of the work. Think about what you actually want to get out of your specialism before you go any further I think you are spreading yourself very thin here!
