Cameron Powell Specialism Form Results

Image
First Form On November 1st 2023, I decided to create a Microsoft form for my Specialism Project. I thought of asking some students and staff members what character designs they like the look of the most. The one who receives the most votes will be the one that I focus on for my test level, creating a sprite set for them. The characters I chose for the form were Axel, Cole, Queenie, Florence and Selena.  One week later, I managed to gain nine responses. Five responded with Selena, Three responded with Axel and One responded with Cole.  I feel like a majority voted for Selena because of the fact her sketch was much more dynamic than the others, as evident by the responses to Question 2.   Second Form On November 22nd that same year, I decided to make a second form. This time, I made one focusing on the villains; Afterburner, Clara Voyant, Lord Steelbone, Atta De Struct and Lollipop. That way, the villain who gets the most votes will be the one I shall base the theme ...

Cameron Powell Final Specialism Proposal

Cameron Powell Final Specialism Proposal Overview: What I will be doing For my Specialism Project, I will be developing a 2.5D arcade style beat ‘em up video game about superheroes (2.5D meaning 2D sprites in a 3D environment or a 3D interface). I envision the game having an art style inspired by Japanese Animation, so I will be taking inspiration from some of the most popular examples of anime, as well as comic book superheroes from the likes of DC and Marvel. I will be sketching all my ideas on paper and document them on my blog, explaining what they are and what inspired me to make them. After I have drawn all of the characters and scenarios for my project, I will produce a Microsoft Form document, asking for student feedback as well as who they want to see in action for my final product. Once all the votes are in, I will draw model sheets of the characters who got the most votes and redraw them on Photoshop. I will also develop a 3D environment for my character to mov...

Cameron Powell Specialism Proposal Draft

Overview: What I want to do What I want to do is develop a video game influenced by Japanese animation and superheroes.  I envision the game as a single player side-scrolling action-adventure game. I also envision the game in a 2D art style, which would be a first for me.  I will program a test level on Unreal Engine with some 2D assets imported. Methodology: How I will do this For starters, I will sketch my ideas on paper, ranging from character concepts to spider diagrams. I will also provide mood boards of sources that I took inspiration from and explain how they inspired me.  Since I have never experienced 2D animation before, I will watch tutorial videos to get an understanding on how it works.  I will try my hand at drawing in other art styles as a form of experimentation. Examples include Pixel art and realistic art. After I have found my niche, I will draw my sprite sheets and assets on Adobe Photoshop and Animate. I will also produce some test animations, sh...

The Incredibles Figure 1: The Incredibles The Incredibles is a 2004 computer animated superhero comedy film directed by Brad Bird, produced by Pixar and distributed by Disney. It is Pixar’s sixth animated film as well as their first film to garner a PG rating. The film centres around retired superhero Bob Parr, also known as Mr Incredible, struggling to live a normal life after the government has forced superheroes to retire due to public damage. One day, Bob stepped out of his retirement when he found out a former fan of his called Buddy Pine became a supervillain known as Syndrome. He plans to kill every superhero with his Omnidroid machines so that he can step in and save the day when the world needs a hero the most. With the help of his wife Helen, also known as Elastigirl, and their children Dash and Violet, Bob has to stop Syndrome’s plan from coming to fruition and make superheroes legal again. The Incredibles is one of my personal favourite movies of all time, so it's easy ...

Cameron Powell Specialism Character Concepts

Image
This blog is dedicated to the concept art I have drawn for the Specialism project. A majority of these sketches have been done during Summer and Autumn 2023. Figure 1: Axel Jones (S.U.P.E.R gear) This sketch depicts Axel Jones in his superhero gear. I gave him a tracksuit that gives his body maximum flexibility, gloves and boots that can deal major damage to enemies and goggles to prevent stuff from getting in his eyes while running. I primarily used different shades of blue for his outfit; Navy Blue for the whole tracksuit, Cyan for the gloves and boots and Blue for the accents. His outfit as a whole was designed to be an Expy of Marvel's Quicksilver and DC's Kid Flash, both of whom are also speedsters. His insignia is a foot with electricity bolts spewing from the bottom, which reflect his ability to run fast and generate electricity. Figure 2: Axel Jones (Casual)  I've decided to draw another sketch of Axel Jones, this time in his casual outfit. I gave him a jacket, jean...

Cameron Powell Specialism Story Production

Introduction This year, I have been given the task to do a Specialism project. The aim of this project is to develop skills in areas we can improve on and develop new skills as well. The theme I picked for my project was superheroes with an art style influenced by Japanese animation. I spent most of my summer drawing concept sketches of my characters. I intend to develop on them by explaining their personalities and backstories as well as their sources of inspiration. The type of game I want to make is a 2D Beat 'Em Up style game inspired by Streets of Rage and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games. Since I have not developed a game like that before, I will be looking at tutorial videos online about creating 2D sprites and programming them in Unreal Engine. I have also decided to create a story behind the game, developing on the lore and characters. The Story In a world where superheroes were deemed illegal, a young college student named Axel Jones touched a mete...
